In the mid-twentieth century, McCaysville served as an industrial and commercial center for Fannin County and surrounding areas, at times rivaling the popularity of Blue Ridge. In the 20th century, McCaysville is the lesser of the two towns in Fannin County. Many permanent residents who cannot afford the high prices of Blue Ridge live in McCaysville instead.
